Math

In 5th grade, students are introduced to many algebraic and geometric fundamentals to be used the rest of their educational careers. As a class, we build a vocabulary journal that will help guide students both in the classroom and on homework.

With the recent changes in math standards, students are required to use a more complex way of looking at a problem. Many times students will not be asked what the correct answer is, but what would be the proper steps, is it reasonable, what could be the next step, etc. With that in mind, it is more important than ever to make sure students process through step by step and be able to explain what is happening.

Basic fundamentals are the foundation to all math. One of those fundamentals is math facts. Students need to have multiplication facts memorized so they can focus on working a problem with accuracy instead of struggling with basic math facts. Because multiplication facts are used in more than 25 topics in 5th grade math, students are required to write math facts as part of homework until they show mastery.
